Marketing Automation
Customer.io
Customer.io is a behavioural messaging platform: instead of sending to a list, you send to people based on what they did — signed up, abandoned a step, hit a usage threshold, stopped logging in. You define those events, build journeys in a visual workflow builder, and messages fire across email, push, SMS, and in-app. Unlike most products in this directory it is not a new launch; it's an established platform, and the company says it is trusted by 9,000+ brands.
The number that decides fit is the floor: Essentials starts at $100/month, and the next tier up starts at $1,000/month billed yearly. There's a 14-day free trial with no card required, but no free plan and no cheap entry point beyond it. The other thing to understand before you shop is that Customer.io's strength — event-triggered messaging — assumes something is *sending* it those events, which usually means developer work to instrument your product or site. Its Summer Release placed #8 on Product Hunt on 31 July 2026 with 153 points.

Pricing
Read from Customer.io's pricing page in August 2026 (verify current). Pricing scales on profiles and message volume, not seats:
- Free trial — 14 days, no credit card required, cancel anytime (advertised on the homepage); there is no permanent free plan
- Essentials — starts at $100/month billed monthly — 5,000 profiles (people + objects), 1 million emails/month, 2 object types, visual workflow builder, AI Agent with core skills, LLM actions with a 100K credit sample, email and community support
- Premium — starts at $1,000/month billed yearly — custom profile and email volume, 10 object types, elevated AI agent limits and custom skills, Daily Routines, premium chat and email support, 90-day onboarding, HIPAA compliance, premium data integrations
- Enterprise — quote-based — best volume pricing, priority support, migration support, a dedicated CSM, dedicated hardware, audit logging and data governance
Overages are published: $0.009 per additional profile, $0.12 per additional 1,000 emails, and $10 per 100K additional AI credits. Customer.io also runs a Startup Program giving 12 months free to companies that have raised under $10M — worth checking if you're venture-backed, and irrelevant if you're bootstrapped. New accounts are manually reviewed before outbound sending is enabled, so you can't sign up and broadcast the same hour.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Best-in-class event-triggered messaging — behavioural journeys that list-based tools genuinely cannot replicate
- The 1M email allowance on Essentials is enormous; if you have a large list and modest profile count, the effective cost per send is very low
- Transparent, published overage rates rather than a mystery bill when you exceed a tier
Cons
- $100/month floor once the 14-day trial ends puts it out of reach for most owner-operators and side businesses
- Getting value requires instrumenting events, which usually means developer time — this is not a tool a non-technical owner sets up alone
- The jump from Essentials to Premium is 10× the price, so growing past 5,000 profiles gets expensive fast
- Manual account review before sending delays your first campaign
- The AI Agent is explicitly in beta, with the more useful limits reserved for the $1,000/month tier
Who should use Customer.io?
Customer.io fits a product-led business — a SaaS app, a marketplace, a subscription service — with someone technical who can emit events, and a real reason to message people based on behaviour rather than list membership. If onboarding sequences, usage nudges, and churn-prevention flows drive your revenue, it does that better than almost anything else.
It's the wrong tool for most small businesses this directory serves. A freelancer, shop, or local service business sending newsletters and promotions should not pay $1,200 a year for behavioural infrastructure they won't instrument. Brevo and ActiveCampaign cover campaigns and reasonable automation at a fraction of the cost, and HubSpot Marketing Hub is the better fit if you want CRM and marketing together.
On evidence: Customer.io's long operating history and stated 9,000+ customers are the meaningful signal here — though that customer count is the vendor's own claim, not an audited figure. We were unable to read a G2 or Capterra rating for it during this August 2026 research pass, so no third-party score is quoted rather than one repeated second-hand.
FAQs
Is Customer.io free?+
There's a 14-day free trial with no credit card required, but no permanent free plan — Essentials starts at $100/month as of August 2026. The one exception is the Startup Program, which gives 12 months free to companies that have raised under $10M in funding.
How much does Customer.io cost per month?+
Essentials starts at $100/month billed monthly for 5,000 profiles and 1 million emails. Premium starts at $1,000/month billed yearly with custom volumes, and Enterprise is quote-based. Extra profiles cost $0.009 each and extra emails $0.12 per 1,000.
Do I need a developer to use Customer.io?+
Realistically, yes. Campaigns and workflows are built in a visual editor, but the behavioural triggers that justify the price depend on your product or site sending events to Customer.io, and that instrumentation is developer work. Businesses without engineering help get far less from it than list-based tools would give them.
Customer.io or ActiveCampaign?+
ActiveCampaign for a small business doing email marketing, light CRM, and contact-based automation at a much lower entry price. Customer.io when messaging must react to in-product behaviour in real time, you have engineering support, and $100/month minimum is proportionate to what the automation earns.
