What's different about Illinois for the self-employed
- Illinois has no local income taxes. The 1.5% replacement tax applies to partnerships and S corporations, not sole proprietors.
- The personal exemption disappears entirely above $250,000 of federal AGI ($500,000 joint).
- Illinois taxes individual net income at a flat 4.95% (the 2026 IL-1040-ES worksheet multiplies net income by 4.95%).
- An Illinois LLC that misses its annual report goes delinquent, and a $100 late-filing penalty applies if it is not filed within 60 days of the due date.
Illinois estimated payments and deadlines
Illinois collects its own estimated income tax with Form IL-1040-ES, separately from the IRS. Required if you reasonably expect your Illinois tax liability to exceed $1,000 after subtracting Illinois withholding, pass-through withholding and allowable credits.
